       The wreath in the painting is fashioned of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme as an artistic reference to one of my favorite albums of the Sixties, and one of everybody's favorite songs on the album was "Feelin' Groovy." Every time I walk down Pirates Alley in the French Quarter, I can't help thinking of the lines, "Hello, Lamppost, whatcha knowin'? I've come to watch your flowers growin'! Ain'tcha got no rhymes for me? Doot-in' doo-doo Feelin' Groovy" (~Paul Simon)

       The young lady in the painting is my imaginative recreation of a very real memory of mine from almost half a century ago~

       I was about 16 years old, in New Orleans with my family visiting my grandmother and aunt Nona Laurie and uncle Sam. We were all standing on Royal Street looking down Pirates Alley on a breathtakingly beautiful Sunday, when the bells began to ring in the St. Louis Cathedral, signifying the end of Mass. The side doors opened, and out flew a beautiful blonde girl, about my age, shaking her hair loose as she ran down the steps. An artist who was set up with his easel right by the lamppost there spoke to her as she passed by, and the young lady turned and smiled at him and said something in return before skipping out of sight down Cabildo Alley. I was transfixed! It was the most charming scene, and I fantasized that the artist had probably said, "You are as beautiful as the day!," and that she turned and replied, "Oh, thank you, kind sir!"

       It wasn't until 20 years later, after working on Jackson Square for about ten years, that it suddenly hit me one day what they really said to each other. The artist said, "Would you like to get your portrait drawn?"  and the beautiful young girl answered, "No thank you!" and ran on down the Alley! Oh, well. She really WAS as beautiful as the day, and it's too bad she didn't get her portrait drawn that day. Wherever she may be now, this is my tribute to the lovely memory!
